Lesson 1 Brainwave Entrainment (BWE)

brainwaves.jpg

There are at current accepted by the scientific community 5 brainwave states, however other research such as Epsilon, Hyper-gamma and Lambda frequencies do suggests more.

Epsilon - 0.5Hz & lower

Delta - 0Hz to 4Hz

Theta - 4Hz to 8Hz

Alpha - 8Hz to 12Hz

Beta - 12Hz to 27Hz

Gamma - 27Hz to 125hz

Hypergamma - 100Hz - 200Hz

Lambda - 200Hz and higher

Throughout our waking life, our brainwaves change daily, even now you reading this your mind is started to get deeper into the words, which is why we tend to get lost in the words and the story or information which we read. Think of our brain as an engine, the higher the revs are, it uses more fuel and runs faster. Driving down the highway you are at a much peak state of concentration. Imagine now the engine drops its revs and its now going more slowly, the drive can be more relaxing and smooth when the vehicle comes to a complete stop, its engine is slowly ticking over but still, like the low hum, purring of a motorcycles engine at the traffic lights or waiting.

Our brain too is like an engine, when it’s operating faster our brain is producing faster brainwaves, this usually happens during attention and focus. The slower the brain wave frequencies, we become more asleep or deeply relaxed.

Right now you should be in the Alpha/Beta range 8Hz to 27Hz. Although most likely Beta 12Hz to 27Hz. Unless of course, you are daydreaming and not very present. You can be mostly in Alpha 8Hz to 12Hz. Some healers & trance mediums have shown to switch into Theta/Alpha & Beta during fully awake and alert. Probably how their brain is hardwired to be the 'medium' of these frequencies and where their mind also switches into the more creative/intuitive 'right brain' as opposed to the left brain where more analytical thinking takes place, being too present in the moment and thinking logically usually blocks the intuitive mind from performing, so it’s important to have balance, the middle point, being a medium, the medium mind.

When we get into lower brainwave frequencies such as low Delta 0Hz to 4Hz, we are in the state of sleep. However, this is when our brainwaves are in a state of that vibration. As with brainwave entrainment, and how it works is to do with the law of resonance. Where the frequency and vibration of that tone can affect another vibration so much that it is forced to be 'paired' so that the two objects 'synchronise' together.

Typically how audio brainwave entrainment (BWE) known also as binaural beats is by wearing stereo headphones with two different frequencies creating a vibrato effect to achieve one focused whole brainwave state. For example; the left ear would have 100hz and the right headphone in the right ear 110hz, the difference is 10hz of those who frequencies creating a focused whole brainwave state, a centre tone of those two frequencies. This tone is known as a binaural beat.

Isochronic tones are different and work by one continuous tone in both ears, a repeated tone, almost like the consistent beat of a shamanic drum, entraining the listener’s brainwaves into that specific frequency.

You can almost imagine it very similar to the ongoing drone of someone who is unhappy and depressed, or even happy, we all know how contagious a laugh is or a smile. When someone else is in a positive state of mind, it can only force us 'eventually' to transverse into that state, laugh with them, cry with them, etc.

Dreamtime is a very interesting state of consciousness to monitor, during the night our brainwaves change. From the time we get into bed it takes roughly 10-20 minutes for our brainwaves to ramp down and transition from one brainwave state, to another, from Beta to Alpha to Theta to slower Theta and then to Delta and low Delta.

In the deepest part of our sleep we enter into REM (Rapid eye movement). During our 7-9 hour sleep period, our brain experiences spikes of gamma waves, shifts through to Theta and back down to REM until we wake up in the morning.

The Hypnagogic state is a transitional state of fully awake and alert to deep sleep. During this middle phase, experiences of daydreaming, thinking, imagery are quite vivid. This includes hallucinations, dreaming, lucid dreaming and also sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is a normal phenomenon (where your mind is so disconnected from your physical body, you can not move, its a state of paralysis).

With the use of high-end technology audio formats such as Hemi-Sync, Holosync, Brainsync have been credited for many years for their usage and performance in many areas of life.

Caution - Always be careful when downloading audio files especially from YouTube, as the frequencies are compressed, and most likely won’t be doing you any favours. For this purpose you can download or stream one of my guided tracks I use for my retreats:
